ABOUT US

Asha is a non-profit voluntary organization, dedicated to promoting literacy among children, particularly the poor and underprivileged, in India. This pursuit is based on the conviction that an educated population is a critical prerequisite, and an effective catalyst, for social and economic progress. Asha was founded in 1991 in Berkeley, and has now grown to a strength of about 48 chapters in North America, 12 in India , and 6 in Europe and 1 inCanada . Volunteers in each of these chapters take personal interest in identifying education-related projects in India, and supporting them through funds and other means.

We are the Purdue university chapter of the organization Asha for Education, which currently has 67 chapters all over the world. The mission of Asha is to catalyze socio-economic change in India through the education of underprivileged children.Asha-Purdue’s activities have shown significant growth over the past couple of years. From just one project to start with, Asha Purdue now supports 5 projects in India and  have disbursed $90,000 to our projects in 2011-2016. We are currently reviewing more projects to fund in the coming years. Our activities include 5k run, cultural events (Tarang, Jashn, Tamasha), movie screenings, Global food festival and discussions on education related issues (movies, speakers). We, at Asha-Purdue, are driven by a common desire to make a difference by raising awareness among people about social issues and raising funds to support our projects for unprivileged children back home. We firmly believe in ideas of service, volunteerism and positive outlook towards a better future.
